Louisiana Purchase treaty signed
The United States and France signed the Louisiana Purchase treaty on April 30, 1803, for $15 million, adding about 828,000 square miles west of the Mississippi. The change to American law later curtailed self-purchase rights that enslaved people had held under Spain.
