Sourced, all the way down.
Every event in the Record names its sources and says whether we have read them. This page is the method and the way to correct us.
How an event gets in
Each event is written in one or two plain sentences and tied to at least one source. We prefer primary records: laws, treaties, court opinions, census tables, federal registrations, archival finding aids and period newspapers. Scholarly books and journals come next. Encyclopedias and Wikipedia are used only as secondary support.
What "verified" means
An event is marked verified only when we have read a source that states the fact directly. When sources disagree, or when the original document has not been pulled yet, the event is marked "Source being confirmed" until it is.
What we do not do
- We do not publish a claim without a source.
- We do not attack Cajun people or families. We document institutions, budgets, names and labels.
- We do not use AI images of real places. Installation images on this site are imagined and labeled as such.
Corrections
If you find an error, write to info@before1764.com with the event and your source. Corrections are made in public, and the correction runs as visibly as the claim.
