Legislature creates CODOFIL by Act 409
Governor John J. McKeithen signed Act No. 409 of 1968 on July 20, 1968, creating the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana with James Domengeaux, attorney and former U.S. Congressman, as chairman. The agency promoted standard French and Acadian heritage, and critics have long said it marginalized Louisiana Creole and Creoles of color.
