Latrobe records African drumming and dance at Congo Square
In an 1819 journal entry, architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe wrote the most detailed surviving account of the Sunday gatherings of enslaved people at Congo Square, describing many drummers. Enslaved people were permitted to gather and sell goods there on Sundays, a practice that continued until the 1840s.
