Census asks an ancestry question for the first time

The 1980 U.S. Census added a write-in ancestry question, the first census to collect ethnic origin regardless of how many generations removed a person was from the country of origin. This let Louisianans write "Cajun" or "Acadian" as an ancestry, while no comparable federal tabulation existed for Louisiana Creole identity.
